Judging canine strength and toughness is a difficult job because they are mostly never put into situations where it would make it necessary for them to utilize their strength. Nevertheless, looking back at history and the statistics of certain dog breeds, it is possible to figure out which are the ones that would produce the strongest and toughest canine specimens in existence today. Remember that this isn’t a list of the world’s largest dogs, so it will consist of breeds that are the strongest pound-for-pound rather than just being the heaviest or the tallest.

German Shepherd

One of the most intelligent and loyal dog breeds in existence, German Shepherds are also extremely strong and durable by default. There is a reason as to why these are the dogs of choice for police, military, bomb detection squads, and security forces all over the world and that reason has a lot to do with the fact that the combination of brain and brawn make them a force to reckon with.

Siberian Husky

One of the top 5 dog breeds that love cold weather, the Siberian Husky is immensely strong. They used to (and still do in certain parts of the world) pull sleds carrying hundreds of pounds in both human weight and supply weight across heavy snow in the toughest of terrains imaginable. While manual labor might not be something that most Huskies have to deal with nowadays, they are nevertheless, very strong dogs.

Pit Bull

Think about the likes of Conor McGregor and Stipe Miocic from the world of mixed martial arts and that’s what pit bulls are like in the canine world. Of course, no MMA fighter is exactly bred to fight like pit bulls are. Unfortunately, barbaric and cruel as it may be, the fact remains that pit bulls with the right training can become absolute monsters. The breeding is done in a way to make sure that they are muscular and extremely strong by default and then with the violent training which they receive, they become the ultimate fighters of the canine world. The good news is that dog fights are illegal in most nations nowadays and unless you train them to be violent, pit bulls are very loving and gentle creatures that make great pets, in spite of their fearsome looks. Just make sure that owning one isn’t illegal in your state.

Carpathian Shepherd

When a dog has a history of standing up to bears in the wild to protect his flock of sheep or his master, you know that you are dealing with a very strong and courageous animal. Carpathian shepherds are tough, brave, intelligent, extremely loyal, and can withstand the harshest of weather conditions prevalent in the famous European mountain range after which they are named.

If you are planning to adopt a strong, reliable, and loyal dog, you cannot go wrong with any of these four. However, as it is with all big dogs, they are going to require significantly more care than smaller breeds, which basically means that you have to spend a lot more money than you would if you were to adopt a pug or a dachshund, for example. If you can afford it though, their company is well worth it.
